Sapphire is employed in a wide variety of markets – from substrates for light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to optical windows for industrial and military use, abrasion-resistant windows in bar code scanners, and scratch-proof crystal faces of wristwatches. Another use is for the SoS/RFIC market where silicon-on-sapphire wafers are used in the production of high-performance radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs). Mobile devices, smart phones and other electronics.


There are multiple crystal growing and fabrication techniques used to create the many final forms of sapphire – crystal boule, core, wafer, window, dome, etc.  In addition to the primary crystal growing processes, today there are multiple proprietary variations of these methods employed by manufacturers worldwide.
