Clearly Brilliant, Clearly Powerful, Clearly Sapphire

The move to large diameter sapphire wafers isn’t just a matter of making larger diameter wafer.  The laws of physics mean that larger diameter wafers need to get thicker in order to maintain their quality.  For example, six inch wafers need to be as much of three times thicker than 2” wafers, consuming three times as much base sapphire material to make the larger wafer.

At this time, there are no standards for larger diameter wafers, although de facto standards are emerging through the qualification process for sapphire vendors with each LED manufacturer.  SEMI® is the global industry association serving the manufacturing supply chain for the micro- and nano-electronics industries including the semiconductor industry that includes sapphire wafers.  The organization is working on standards for large diameter wafers.
